When I began learning Egyptian hieroglyphs, I found many excellent resources: simple alphabet books introducing a few signs, and complete language courses teaching grammar, vocabulary, and translation.
What I struggled to find was something in between: a practical workbook devoted to learning the signs themselves through tracing, repetition, and active recall.
I wanted to recognize each hieroglyph at a glance, remember its Gardiner code, learn its transliteration, and connect it with its conventional pronunciation. I wanted these essential foundations to become familiar enough that I could use other learning methods with greater confidence.
This workbook brings together
140 commonly used uniliteral, biliteral, and triliteral signs encountered when studying Middle Egyptian. It is designed as a practical companion to almost any grammar book, course, or reading method, not as a replacement for them.
This is the workbook I wished I had.
Each hieroglyph was drawn by hand by me, with care, to make it clear and enjoyable to trace.
Through short, progressive modules, you will:
- Trace and practise drawing the signs,
- Learn their Gardiner codes and standard transliterations,
- Use English and French descriptions and pronunciation guidance,
- Create revision cards,
- Strengthen your memory through repeated recall exercises.
The aim is not artistic perfection or instant memorization, but familiarity, built gradually through observation, handwriting, repetition, and regular review.
Created from a genuine love for hieroglyphs and a very practical need, I hope this workbook becomes a simple, encouraging companion on your own learning journey.
